about

I developed this piece for a performance at Wilmington's Cameron Art Museum, as part of their "State of the Art" event on April 1 of 2022. I've performed at this museum a few times before, as CHANGES TO blind and as part of ensembles including the Slow Ear Ensemble.

Writing for the museum space I envisioned a concept of colors, translated into sound through references that had significance to me or to each color. I also considered the achromatic "color" white, and the absence of color, black. I initially conceived a series of hues and started notating tones, textures and sample sources that would work for each. As I started experimenting with the composition I realized that each color justified a rather extended section to fully flush out its essence, and that the piece could easily expand into and hour-long piece, much more than expected. Enjoying the concept, I focused on the first two chromatic colors I had developed--orange and red--along with the non-chromatics white and black. I leave future colors for future performances.

The show at the Cameron was unexpectedly cancelled when an earlier drum performance was reported to the police, and it was suggested that I could perform only at a low volume. Of all the locations I least expected to be "shut down" by officials, the Cameron Art Museum would have been amongst the first in my list. Wishing to perform the piece, I scheduled a concert in Squidco's own Hooked on Sonics series at BarZarre, and finally performed the work on April 20, 2022.

This recording is a multi-track performance two nights before that performance. The piece is performed live on a Sunvox Touch Theremin, 4 Loopy HD sessions, and 5 Farrago sets of roughly 20 samples each. It is presented as performed with no edits.

lyrics

I squeeze my eyes closed
The blackness envelops my mind
As pinpricks of white dance in front
Slowly fading back to an absence of color
The eyes sliding back and forth
As emerge a narrative of hues
Colorful dreams in red and orange
Savage in portents of death
And the brilliance of life
I open my eyes to nothing

CHANGES TO blind Wilmington, North Carolina

CTb was borne in Syracuse, NY in the mid 80s. Originally the trio of phil zampino, Mortimer deSquid & Heraldo deSquid, only zampino survives. Wires and boxes were dragged about and throttled, moving to Manhattan in 1992 as improvisation krept into the mix. Now in Wilmington, NC the kurrent state of affairs involves exposition, as CTb airs its dirty underdrawers for the listener's disdain. ... more
