Sunday Sounds in Lisbon

In the summer of 2021, as the pandemic wound down and travel became (marginally) possible between the US and parts of Europe, JM & I journeyed to Portugal to celebrate my 60th birthday. Despite the challenges of testing and reporting on our health, and the excessive amount of control encountered through the airports and customs departments, we were fortunate to arrive and return, each time just barely as we gnawed our knuckled over turnaround time for the proof of our health.

The downside for the trip was a lack of concerts, performances or night clubs, as the performing arts had not fully returned; fortunately great restaurants made up for the lack of nightlife. The upside was a period in Lisbon where crowds were small, attractions were not overrun, costs were reasonable, and we did not wait on long lines anywhere that we went.

On the last days of our trip JM & I split up to pursue different goals in Lisbon. My interest was to capture the sounds of a quiet Sunday in the city, walking through the neighborhoods near The Tagus river, into and out of stores, listening to the omnipresent jets heading to the nearby airport. The weather was beautiful, the sun out, people were in a good mood, and I enjoyed meandering through the city.

On our return home I composed this piece using those field recordings as an auditory memory of that day, and of our trip, which I share with you, my listener.
