Dissembling to Seem Whole

by CHANGES TO blind

about

Despair and abstraction from a situation imposed on all of us; a collective action and shared experience, albeit unique to each person's circumstance. A cataclysmic change that forced all to reassess, to redetermine our relationship to purpose and to each other within our personal sphere. For nearly one and a half years we have been subject to forces sinister and furtive, from pathogens floating in front of us to politicians feigning and dissembling. Confusion, uncertainty, doubt and dismay amidst death, disunity and divisiveness.

The structure of the piece is a series of connected chapters in sound, each chapter defined by a series of referential samples and sound sources and accompanied by a touch theremin. The samples allow for improvisation and re-sequencing in performance, and the touch theremin is fully improvised to reflect the mood of the samples selected. Each chapter is led by the roll of a typewriter, as the protagonist attempts to evade the frustrations before them only to encounter disruptive interventions that block placidity and stability.

For nearly a year and a half there were no opportunities to perform live, in front of physically present people who were not streaming in data bytes. I spent that year of despair creating audio samples and composing music for release and for future performance. This piece is formed from the selection of thematic material created and gathered during that time. It was, finally, performed live in Wilmington, NC on June 12, 2021 at the 910 Noise Showcase @ Barzarre.

This recording was captured the night before that concert in my studio, performed using the same configuration of equipment that would be used for the live performance. Two tiny edits were made to remove audio equipment glitches, but no other edits or changes were made to the recordings; this is for all intents and purposes, a live improvised rendering of the piece.

CHANGES TO blind Wilmington, North Carolina

CTb was borne in Syracuse, NY in the mid 80s. Originally the trio of phil zampino, Mortimer deSquid & Heraldo deSquid, only zampino survives. Wires and boxes were dragged about and throttled, moving to Manhattan in 1992 as improvisation krept into the mix. Now in Wilmington, NC the kurrent state of affairs involves exposition, as CTb airs its dirty underdrawers for the listener's disdain. ... more
