Uncle Don's Telescopic Circus

about

Developed in my studio in the November of 2022, I was enticed and fully engaged in this composition by the album it's sourced from: perhaps the oldest record in my collection, a 10" on Varsity Records from the 1950's (no one seems to know the actual year it was recorded or released) titled:

Uncle Don
A Day At The
CIRCUS
and
An Airplane Trip

[catalog code 6930]

My parents must have bought it for me in the early 1960s when I was -4 years old, and it seems like I've always owned it, abused it, ignored it, made fun of it, then finally come to respect its tenacity.

Presenting two somewhat silly stories with sound effects, the album is essentially a single-person narrative kiddy radio show, hosted by the somewhat peculiar-sounding relative from your family, your Uncle Don. Joking aside, the narrator is Uncle Don Carney, whose very popular radio show ran from 1928 to 1939 - you can read more about him at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncle_Don.

Regardless, the stories here are predictable but apparently appropriate for the age I was when it was gifted, as I still own it and can play it through wincing ears with my "bad record" cartridge. It seems I've always known the story, though I hadn't listened to it in more than 50 years. What better album to sample from?

Somewhat a tragedy now without a real lesson, I was obsessed with the composition and construction of this piece for several weeks. I hope it shows through the story's details and weirdness. And if you only find weird, please recall that I was influenced by this along the way.

lyrics

There y'are
See what happens?
That little girl just let go
Of the string on her balloon,
And there it goes

CHANGES TO blind Wilmington, North Carolina

CTb was borne in Syracuse, NY in the mid 80s. Originally the trio of phil zampino, Mortimer deSquid & Heraldo deSquid, only zampino survives. Wires and boxes were dragged about and throttled, moving to Manhattan in 1992 as improvisation krept into the mix. Now in Wilmington, NC the kurrent state of affairs involves exposition, as CTb airs its dirty underdrawers for the listener's disdain. ... more
