Greenfield Firecracks

Fireworks in the pandemic age are different, with no large gatherings and community displays. The neighborhood has taken charge, and around us on the lake a number of private displays fill the air, contrasting with the frogs and other creatures inhabiting the night. I was drawn to the contrast in normal nighttime ambiance and the percussive explosions, from pops to loud cracks of sounds, fizzles, streaming air, and the distantly excited murmuring of people.

I went out on our yard, which has a good vantage point in height, to capture field recordings of what I heard, walking from location to location to create different pastiches of spectacle and background, turning in an arc at each fixed locations to render the sound from differing perspectives. I then took those recordings into the studio to create long samples that could be triggered in performance.

Once ready, I performed an improvisation using those recordings, alongside earlier Greenfield lake recordings, both field recordings and effected and transformed recordings. I also used a VSS30 sample loop, a Sunvox patch to create deep bass and high whines, a looped prepared cymbal recording, an elk call, a New Years crank, a frame drum, and a Korg MS 2000. I recorded the piece and mixed it in Cubase, correcting some volume issues but leaving the original improvisation otherwise intact.
